A minimum of 13 people killed and ninety-eight injured in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship government projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” stated the head of state.

The president reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The building of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its role in civilian works. They were completed at an accelerated rate, surpassing predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked ongoing questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party called for an prompt suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."

In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in full adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these national projects.
